Getting Invisalign® in Plymouth, MI, is a fantastic option for those who want straighter teeth without the hassle of traditional braces. However, as with anything new, it can come with a few hiccups. No need to worry though, as our dental practice is here to share some quick tips that will keep you smiling throughout your journey.

Let’s dive right in!

10 Common Issues with Invisalign and How to Fix Them

1. Dealing with Discomfort

Switching to a new set of aligners can make your teeth feel sore. It’s perfectly normal, as it’s a sign they’re working, but it doesn’t have to be painful.

Relieve any irritation by applying a small piece of orthodontic wax on any sharp edges. Taking a pain reliever like ibuprofen is also a good idea, and be sure to stick to soft foods for the next first few days.

2. Keeping Them Clean

Aligners can get a bit icky if not cleaned properly. Brush them gently with a soft toothbrush and lukewarm water (no hot water – it can warp them). Soak them in *Invisalign cleaning crystals or denture cleaner to keep them sparkling. Also, avoid staining foods and drinks, or at least rinse your mouth and aligners right after indulging.

3. Attachments Falling Off

Those little tooth-colored bumps can sometimes come off. If this happens, call your dentist ASAP to get it replaced. And when removing your aligners, be gentle around the attachment areas to prevent them from popping off.

4. Lost or Damaged Aligners

It’s easy to misplace or damage Invisalign aligners. If this happens, call your dentist immediately. They might tell you to wear your previous set or move on to the next one. Always carry an extra aligner case to store them safely when you take them out.

5. Dealing with Speech Adjustments

Wearing aligners can give you a slight lisp. Don’t fret, it’s temporary. Practice speaking as much as possible – read aloud, sing, or chat with friends. Staying hydrated also helps keep your mouth moist and your speech clear.

6. Aligners Not Fitting Properly

If your aligners aren’t fitting snugly, they might not be working effectively. Use chewies (small, cylindrical tools) to help seat your aligners properly. If they still don’t fit right, contact your dentist for an adjustment.

7. Excess Saliva

Wearing Invisalign can sometimes make you feel like a saliva factory. This usually resolves as your mouth adjusts, but in the meantime, swallow more frequently to manage the excess saliva.

8. Nighttime Grinding

If you grind your teeth at night, aligners can feel uncomfortable. Talk to your dentist about using a mouthguard to protect both your aligners and your teeth. Practicing stress-relief techniques can also help reduce nighttime grinding.

9. Dry Mouth Drama

Dry mouth can be a side effect of Invisalign. Drink plenty of water throughout the day to keep your mouth moist, and chew sugar-free gum to stimulate saliva production.

10. Stuck Aligners

Sometimes, aligners can be stubborn when you’re trying to take them out. Use an aligner removal tool to help pop them out without damaging them. Wiggle them gently to loosen them before pulling them out.
